I want my hair to be in tip top condition
Q. I have just returned from a pre-wedding break in Egypt and it seems like the sea and sun have damaged my hair. It's dry and brittle and has multiple split ends. I really don't want to have it all cut off for my new year wedding, but equally I want my hair to look healthy. Can you recommend any miracle cures?
A. Lisa Miller says: Exposure to the elements can really dry out hair, particularly if it has been chemically treated as well. You need to replace moisture with a deep conditioning product that contains keratin or jojoba oil. Kerastase is a fabulous range for dry, damaged hair. It does come with a salon price tag, but it really is worth it to have super shiny hair on your wedding day. Bain Satin is a great shampoo that comes in three strengths from one (for slightly dry hair) to three for very dry hair. I recommend that you use number three in conjunction with Masquintense Epais or Fins. I can appreciate that you don't want to lose length but now is the time for a good trim to get rid of dry hair. |

Bounce down the aisle
Q. I have quite fine shoulder-length hair that I would like to wear in a half up, half down style on my wedding day, and I would like to do my own hairstyling. How do I get body and bounce into it?
A. Lisa Miller says: The key to getting a great blow dry is to start with nearly dry hair. You will need the following products to get a super blow dry: volumising shampoo, conditioner and a blow drying product ? my favourite is the Charles Worthington Dream Hair range ? a hairdryer with a nozzle, three or four crocodile clips, a large round barrel brush, a wide tooth comb and 12 large Velcro rollers.
Start with a volumising shampoo and conditioner. Then add a volumising product directing it at the roots and combing it through to the ends.
Always start your blow drying at the back of the neck first. Section off your hair from ear to ear and clip up the hair above this line. Roll the loose hair around the barrel of the brush and move the nozzle of the hairdryer up and down the length of hair. Give a cold blast of air as you finish.
Section off the rest of your hair. Work up the back of the head, around the sides and up to the crown with the front of your hair being the last area to be dried.
Ideally your hair should be 99 per cent dry and ready for the large Velcro rollers. Section hair off as before, add a spray of volumising product and pop the rollers in. Leave your hair to dry naturally. For a half up, half down style, just pin the crown section up. |

Softer look
Q. I have a square face shape and I'm really not sure what hairstyle to choose for my wedding day. I have fairly fine, shoulder-length light brown curly hair. I'm happy to have anything done with regards to cut and colour and I don't mind wearing my hair up or down. Can you suggest anything, please?
A. Lisa Miller says: First of all, let's clarify a square shape face. A square face will have a wide hair line with a strong jaw that needs to be played down and softened. This can be achieved in a few simple ways with layers and colouring.
It's great that you are happy to have your hair cut and the first option is the 'Rachel' cut, made famous by Jennifer Aniston, who has a strong jaw line too. This is a perfect look for you as it's a medium/shoulder length style, which you already have and all you need are some long layers cut in around your face.
Layers and a long sweeping fringe, cut on a side parting, will offer a totally different angle to your face. The new layers will add texture and volume to your fine hair as well. With this second option you can still have the layers cut in and keep it naturally curly. Curls are very good at making a square face appear softer - as long as your curls are not too heavy and bulky around your face.
Colour will work wonders as well. Lots of lovely caramel, honey and blonde fine highlights would blend well with your natural colour and lift and lighten your face. Make a point of asking your hairdresser to create a 'halo' effect around your face with the lightest shade as this will add softness.
With either straight or curly hair I would suggest a half up, half down wedding style, keeping most of the hair down. The soft curls or long layers around your face will work well with the crown up, which adds some extra height on top. This look will elongate, and a tiara or some hair accessories will keep your whole look romantic and pretty. The singer Duffy actually wears her hair in a lovely example of this style. It suits her square face shape and it's a very appropriate look for bridal hair. Again, this would be perfect for you on your big day. |
